The remains of J. H. Schwenke, formerly a resident of Clayton Center, were brought here last Monday evening to the home of Fred Taake. Funeral services were held at the Taake home yesterday and interment was made in the Clayton Center cemetery. Deceased was a resident of Hartford, S.D.

Elkader Register, Thur., 23 Aug. 1921.

J. H. Schwencke passed away at his home in Hartford Friday noon, after a lingering illness of several weeks duration (Rest of sentence blurred.).

The remains were taken to Parker Sunday and from there shipped to the old home at Elkader, Iowa, and were accompanied by the wife and Mr. and Mrs. John Kruse of Montrose.

Deceased was a long time resident of Hartford and was highly respected and Esteemed by a large circle of friends and acquaintances.

Mr. Schwencke was 73 years of age and is survived by his wife and other relatives.

John Henry Schwencke was born August 8, 1848, at Warlow, near Ludwigslust, Mecklenberg, Schwerin, Germany, where he grew to young manhood. He came to the United States in the year 1868 and made his home at different times in Guttenberg and Davenport, Iowa, and at St. Louis, Mo. Finally settled at Clayton Center, Iowa, in 1862, where he was married to Miss Wilhelmine Taake on March 13, 1873.

In March 1910, he and his wife moved to Hartford, S.D., where he has since resided until his death on August 12th, 1921, at the age of 73 years and 4 days. His father and three brothers died in Germany, while his mother is buried at Clayton Center. A sister, Mrs. Niehaus, rests at Leonora, Kans.

Besides his wife he leaves to mourn his loss one sister, Mrs. C. F. Behrens of Bryant, S.D., two adopted daughters, Mrs. Minnie (Linden or Linder) of Steen, Minn., and Mrs. J. C. Kruse of Montrose, S.D.

Funeral services were held last week Wednesday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Taake here, and also in the Zions church at Clayton Center, with Rev. Weise officiating. Interment was made in the Clayton Center Cemetery.
