Elkader Register, Thur., 26 May 1921. Local News Notes columns.
Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Scheffert of this place sorrow over the death of their seventeen year old daughter, Margaret, which occurred Saturday, May 21st.
Margaret was born at McGregor May 17, 1904. When she was about five years old the family moved to Dubuque, remaining there for about five years and then coming to Elkader some seven years ago. She attended school at Dubuque and St. Joseph's school at this place.
Some months ago her health began to fail and in spite of the efforts of friends and physicians she became a victim of that dread plague, tuberculosis.
She is survived by her parents; three brothers, Peter at Waterloo, Ia., John and Joseph at home; three sisters, Mrs. Henry Losch and Mrs. James Staub of this place, and Lena at home; together with other relatives and friends.
The funeral services were held at St. Joseph's church Tuesday morning, Rev. Father Taken officiating, and interment was in St. Joseph's cemetery. Six boy friends, Edward Finley, George Kelleher, John Meyers, Joseph Shea, Clarence Nugent and Hugh Corkery acted as pall bearers, while six girls friends, Donna Humphrey, Florence Bauer, Marguerite Little, Coletta Hurley, Genevieve Dinan and Elizabeth Melary were honorary pall bearers.
A flower taken just as it was expanding into bloom, her death came as a severe blow to the parents and friends who have the sincere sympathy of the community.
