Elkader Register, Thur., 26 May 1921.
It was indeed a shock to our community, when on Saturday, May 21st, the sad news became known that Hanna Witte had passed away at her mother's home in this city about an hour before noon. It almost seemed too sudden and too sad to believe.
Hanna Minnie was born in Elkader, Iowa, March 1, 1903, as the youngest daughter of George Witte and his wife Anna, nee Tewes. When of school age she attended our public schools, and was always considered to be a diligent student, very conscientious in her work. For the last year she was a junior in our High School and took up the Normal Training course, for it was her greatest desire and ambition to be a teacher. As the school year was drawing to a close, and the customary tests were taken, she was eager to attain to the highest possible credits, and although not being in the best of health for some time, she could not be persuaded to miss school.
Of late she would repeatedly complain of a severe headache, but attended school until Tuesday. On Wednesday morning the doctor was called, and everything possible was done, to give relief. Apparently she was getting along as nicely as could be expected, when on Saturday morning a sudden change in her condition gave cause for alarm. The doctor pronounced it brain-fever, and after a few hours, while those nearest and dearest to her watched at her bedside, she peacefully entered into that sleep from which none ever wakes to weep. Another flower was cut down in the tender bird; a young life of but 18 years, 2 months and 20 days had ceased to exist.
Her early departure is mourned by the grief-stricken mother, Mrs. Anna Witte; one brother, Harvey; one sister, Lucy; and a number of other relatives and friends. One sister, Eunice, preceded her in death Oct. 16th, 1911, and her father, George Witte, on March 26th, 1915.
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Ev. Frieden's church, Rev. Franke officiating, and interment was made in the East Side cemetery.
