Elkader Register, Thur., 12 May 1921. Strawberry Point column.

Irwin Marcus Howard, son of Dr. F. H. Howard and Alice (Clark) Howard, was born at Strawberry Point, Iowa, November 28th, 1898, and died at Cedar Rapids, Iowa, May 3rd, 1921, aged twenty-two and one-half years. He was reared in this community. He was educated in the public school of Strawberry Point, completing the prescribed course and graduating from the High School in the class of 1919. For some months after graduating he was employed as clerk in a drug store here. He then entered the Cedar Rapids Business college at Cedar Rapids from which he graduated on Monday, May 2nd. He had not been in good health for some time, but he courageously pursued his studies, not withstanding his health. On the afternoon of the day of his graduation, he entered Mercy Hospital at Cedar Rapids for an operation for chronic appendicitis and removal of tonsils. The operation was performed by the most skilled surgeons, but complications were disclosed and in his weakened physical condition he was unable to withstand the shock of the operation and on Tuesday evening May 3rd, at seven o'clock, his spirit peacefully took its flight.

Irwin was a genial, companionable, kindhearted young man, who looked at the bright side of life and was a member of the Congregational church. He was never rugged physically, but was persistent in his efforts to acquire an education that would prepare him for useful service. Just as he felt himself prepared to enter worthy business employment, the messenger of Death called him.

He was a young man of excellent habits and strict integrity and always had a genial greeting and kind word for everybody. He is survived by his bereaved parents; one brother, Dr. W. H. Howard of St. Paul, Minn.; and one sister, Mrs. Bessie Young of Marsland, Nebr., who together with the whole community, as his friends, mourn his sudden and unexpected departure.

Impressive funeral services were conducted at the home Thursday, May 5, by the Rev. William W. Maxwell, minister of the Congregational church, and interment was afterwards made at the local cemetery.
