Elkader Register, Thur., 3 Mar. 1921. Fairview column.
Many in this community were greatly surprised to hear of the death of Mrs. Gene Palmer on Wednesday of last week. The news of her sudden illness of the Friday night before had not reached all. Her son, Dr. Carson Palmer of Cassville, was over Saturday, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday and a council was called, but the body was too aged to withstand the severe pain and sickness and death came as a messenger of relief on Wednesday morning. Her son Stephen of Aberdeen, Wash., was summoned as soon as the seriousness of her illness was seen but the death messenger was swifter. Funeral services were held at the Bethel church on Monday, Feb. 21, at 1:30 p.m. Rev. Riggs of Fairview preached and the choir of the church sang. The six sons carried the casket of their mother to the last home. L. A. Zearly of Garber had charge of the body. The following obituary was used:
Lovinia White was born in Lower Quebec, Canada, November 14, 1847, and died February 16, 1921, at her home near Osterdock, Iowa, aged 73 years, three months and 2 days. Her mother died in Canada while she was but a baby. The father shortly after brought his family to Iowa, stopping for a short time in New York. The family came here some 70 years ago so that practically the entire span of her life has been spent in this neighborhood as a farmer's daughter and wife. She was married July 4, 1867, at Elkader to Henry Eugene Palmer, a neighbor boy. To this union were born eleven children, three of whom died in infancy. The other eight are living and will miss mother in the old home. Those living are: Henry, James, Wilmer and Mrs. Rilla Parker of this neighborhood; Wesley and Mrs. Gladys Ferris of Turkey River; Stephen of Aberdeen, Wash.; and Dr. Carson Palmer of Cassville, Wis. Of her brothers and sisters, five survive her, Carson and Vene of this neighborhood; Jim of Minnesota and Mrs. Truesdell of Turkey River and Mrs. Newling of Fokton, S.D. Five have preceded her in death. There are also seventeen grandchildren. Mrs. Palmer and her husband became members of the United Brethren church some fifty years ago at the Mound schoolhouse and were loyal, faithful workers there until death and removals so weakened that class that their membership was transferred to Fairview where the distance and advancing age prevented the enthusiastic service formerly rendered. Five years ago in May the death angel called her husband. The years of separation for them are closed by the re-union on the heavenly shore.
