Guttenberg: Christian Herchert, one of Clayton county's pioneer residents, passed away at his home here on last Thursday afternoon at 4:45 o'clock at the age of 86 years, seven months and four days. The cause of his death was mostly the infirmities of old age. Mr. Herchert was born in Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Germany, on May 1, 1849, where he grew to young manhood and received his early education. Sixty-three years ago he was married at Clayton Centre to Miss Elizabeth Baade, of Garnavillo township. After their marriage the couple settled on a farm near Ossian, where they lived for a time, then going to Garnavillo township again. There they resided on a farm for many years. In February, 1920, the family came to Guttenberg to make their home, where the deceased spent the remainder of his life.
Mr. Herchert was a man of pleasing personality. He was a member of St. John's American Lutheran church of this place. His death is deeply mourned by his Wife; two sons, Edward and Arnold, of Guttenberg; three daughters, Mrs. Gustave Reinitz and Mrs. Alma Siege of this place and Mrs. August Kraus of Garnavillo township; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren, and numerous other relatives and friends.
