Funeral services were held Saturday, Feb. 3, 1996, for Karen M. Shaw, 51, at Sacred Heart Church, Volga. Rev. Thomas Rhomberg officiated the service with burial in Taylorville Cemetery, Arlington. Karen died after a long battle with breast cancer. Honorary pallbearers were Donna Wessel, Donna DeShaw, Marge Brehme, Leta Clausen, Georgia Spielbauer, Kathleen Neylan and Mary Weber. Pallbearers were Mark Woodward, Leland Troester, Duane Duckett, Don Handle, Fred Stroschein, Steve Doeppke and Joe Kuhse.

Karen Mae Shaw, daughter of Leander "Tommy" and Anna (Berns) Stroschein, was born August 7, 1944, in Monona, Iowa. She attended grade school at St. Joseph Catholic School and graduated from Garnavillo High School. She attended Personnel Training School, Omaha, Neb., and worked for Globe Machinery and Collins Radio in Cedar Rapids. On August 1, 1964, she married Vernon Shaw at Garnavillo. Three children were born to this union. Karen lived in New Hampshire, Montreal in Canada, Michigan, Illinois and Kentucky before returning to Iowa in 1988. She was owner of Cool Recovery in Elkader for seven years.

Karen is survived by her husband, Vernon; three daughters, Sherry (Mrs. Bradley) Whitford of Boone, Iowa, Christi Shaw (Mrs. Steve) Poeschl of Indianapolis, Indiana, and Shelley Shaw of Dubuque, Iowa; two grandchildren, Emily and Wesley Whitford; one step-granddaughter, Becky Poeschl; her parents; one sister, Marion (Mrs. Darwin) Moses; and several nieces and nephews.

Karen was preceded in death by her sister, Elaine (Mrs. LaVerne) Troester.
