Guttenberg: The death of William J. Schmell, long a resident of this community, occurred at his home here on last Thursday morning at the age of 76 years, three months and 29 days. His health had been poor for some time previous to his death. Mr. Schmell was born in Warlow, Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Germany, April 23, 1859, where he received his early education and grew to young manhood. He came to America a number of years ago, settling at Guttenberg where the remainder of his life was spent. On March 20, 1900, he was married at Guttenberg to Mrs. Louise Reyer, who preceded him in death Oct. 4, 1927. For a number of years, at various times, he was employed here at the former Zimmerman & Ives saw mill, at the former Guttenberg excelsior factory, by the Er. P. Eberhard Lumber company, by the C.M.St.P. railroad company, (One more to blurred to transcribe.). Of late years he had retired.
He is survived by two step-daughters, Mrs. Frank Morill of Rock Island, Ill., and Mrs. J. E. Brown of Guttenberg; one step-son, John Reyer, of Guttenberg; six grandchildren and other relatives and friends. He will be sadly missed by all. Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. C. A. Jacobi, pastor of the St. Paul's United Lutheran church of Guttenberg, at the Schmell home on Sunday afternoon. Burial was made in the city cemetery.
