Clayton County Register, Thur., 4 July 1935.
Sarah Jane Heiden, nee Hendricks, was born at Cleveland, Ohio, May 28, 1850. In July, 1872, she was married to August Heiden. This couple spent the greater part of their lives farming in this county, and in 1903 they retired from the farm and moved to Guttenberg, Iowa. Her husband was a veteran of the Civil War. He departed this life April 1, 1918.
Mrs. Heiden had been gradually failing for some time, and on June 30th, she departed this life at the Carl Roder home, where she was staying for a few days, at 1:50 p.m., at the age of 85 years, one month and two days. Her passing was peaceful, to a well-earned rest.
The deceased made her home for the greater part of the time with her son, Fred C. Heiden, on a farm near Elkader, for the last ten years or more.
Five children departed this life prior to her death, namely, Frederica Lansky, August Heiden, Henry Heiden, Alvina Joy and Martha Magnuson. The following children, Fred C. Heiden of Elkader, Bernard Heiden of Watertown, S.Dak., Mrs. James Walters of Detroit Lake, Minn., Mrs. Ellen Siege of Dubuque, Mrs. Julia Wittick of Ackley, William Heiden of Ottumwa, Mrs. Alma Wiles of Portland, Ore., Mrs. Christina Friedlein of Dubuque, and Mrs. Elsie Walter of Kirkland, Ill., 36 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren remain to mourn her passing.
Mrs. Heiden was a member of St. Paul's United Lutheran church of Guttenberg, but because of her impaired health was unable to attend services. She was a good wife, a good mother, and a good neighbor, and will be missed by a host of friends.
Services were held from St. Paul's United Lutheran church. Rev. M. J. Harder officiated in the absence of Rev. C. A. Jacobi, the local pastor. Interment was made in the City Cemetery.
