Clayton County Register, Thur., 18 Apr. 1935. Taken from the Alma, Kansas, newspaper.

The following obituary, which was taken from an Alma, Kansas, newspaper, tells of the death and burial of R. A. Hochhaus, who was born in this county:

The news of the death of R. A. Hochhaus, aged 81, at the home of his niece, Mrs. M. A. Vogel, in Topeka, early Sunday morning, March 17th, came as very much of a shock to the old friends here in Alma. Mrs. Hochhaus was here last week and said he was not very well but no one was prepared to hear of his death.

Reinhold A. Hochhaus was born July 14, 1854, in Clayton county, Iowa, and came to Alma in the early '70s where he engaged in business. He ran a wagon shop here for many years. Later he erected buildings where the M. & J. Drug Store and Troutner's Clothing Store are now located. He ran a book store for several years and was also trustee. He was an upright, honest citizen and business man and had many friends. He retired from business several years ago and during the past year he and Mrs. Hochhaus had spent most of their time with his nieces, Mrs. A. B. Haubold in Holton, and Mrs. M. A. Vogel in Topeka.

Mr. Hochhaus was married Nov. 12, 1882, to Theresa Miller, who survives him. He also leaves a sister, Mrs. Charles Peick, and a brother, Frank, both of Elkader, Iowa; and a brother, Fred, of Edgewood, Iowa.

Funeral services were held at 9:30 o'clock Wednesday, March 20, from the Catholic church here, and a large audience of old friends were present to pay their last respects to a good citizen.

Those here from a distance were: Mrs. John Farrell, Henry Brust, Arthur Hochhaus and Henry Hartman of Elkader, Iowa; Mrs. Richardson and son, Mrs. Emma Johnson and Martin Vogel and family of Topeka; and Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Haubold of Holton.

Mrs. Hochhaus will stay in Topeka with Martin Vogels for a while.
