Clayton County Register, Thur., 18 Apr. 1935. Locals columns.
Funeral services were held here a week ago Monday for Joseph Cain, who had died at the home of his sister-in-law, Mrs. Patrick Cain, on Saturday, April 6th. Deceased had been in failing health for nearly four years.
Joseph Cain was the youngest of eleven children born to Patrick and Bridget (Crowley) Cain. He was born July 1, 1871, on the old Cain farm in Boardman township, and so at the time of his death had reached the age of 63 years, nine months and five days.
He attended the rural school and also the town school here, and for a time attended Upper Iowa University. He spent the major part of his life farming the old home farm, where he lived until 1920, when he retired and came to town to make his home with his sister-in-law and her daughters. Here, during his last illness he received the best of care and attention.
Joe Cain was known far for his interest in sports, particularly baseball. While still on the farm he organized and played on a team known as "Cain's Colts." For a space of time this was about the fastest country team in this section of the state. Later he became interested in the various baseball teams of Elkader and followed them year after year, frequently with financial support.
He held membership in the local camp of the Catholic Order of Foresters and as long as health permitted was a regular attendant of St. Joseph's Catholic church, where services were held last week, conducted by the Rev. Father J. P. Taken. Interment was made in St. Joseph's cemetery. Casket-bearers were: James Cain, James Neylan, John Neylan, Clarence Neylan, Will Melary and Emmet Liddy.
His brother, Dr. Cain, was buried in Waukon just two weeks prior, and one of the eleven children, only one sister, Mrs. Margaret Melary, of Hettinger, N.D., survive him. She was unable to attend the services here. Besides his sister he is survived by a number of nephews and nieces, as well as other relatives and friends.
A niece, Mrs. Alvin Roder of Minneapolis, Minn., was here to attend the services, as well as James Neylan, Jr., of Oelwein. Mr. and Mrs. M. J. Curtis and children of Sioux City came to see him prior to his death but were not here for the funeral.
