John Raymond Stence died at Rochester, Minn., at 1:30 a.m., March 9, 1935, where he had been taken for medical examination and treatment.

The deceased was born on the Stence farm in this township, Nov. 27, 1885, and so at the time of his death had reached the age of 49 years, 3 months and 12 days. He was the son of John and Mary (Brazil) Stence.

He received his early education in the rural schools and the local parochial school. He chose farming as his life's work and operated a large farm located in Boardman, Cox Creek and Read townships, which farm he continued to operate with his family in spite of his failing health of the last two years.

In 1908 he was united in marriage, here, with Miss Ella Cook, and to this union seven children were born, who, together with the widow, survive. They are Francis, Mary, John, Helen, Vincent, James and Gerald. Five sisters and two brothers also mourn his death. They are Mrs. Mary O'Brien, Strawberry Point; Mrs. Ella Henry, Elkader; Sister Mary Regis, Algona; Mrs. Arthur Crary, St. Olaf; Mrs. John Wiley, Littleport; Michael Stence, Elkport; and Mart Stence on the Stence home farm.

Mr. Stence was a member of the local camp of Foresters, served as vice-president and director of the Littleport creamery, was active in the Farm Bureau Association as well as other farm activities. In these groups he will be missed equally as much as in the home.

Funeral services were held in St. Joseph's church here March 11th, at ten o'clock in the forenoon, and interment was made in St. Joseph's cemetery, the Rev. Fr. J. P. Taken officiating.

Casketbearers were Mike Downey, Jake Steen, Harold Downey, Don Tieden, Valmah Wright and Donald Schneider.
