Clayton County Register, Thur., 14 Mar. 1935.
Guy F. Scofield, 60, a life-long resident of Strawberry Point, hanged himself in the barn back of his residence last Thursday afternoon. His family, alarmed by his absence at supper time, summoned aid in a search for him.
Melvin Anderson and Hank Schmidt found the lifeless body. It was thought that worry over financial affairs may have caused the suicide.
He was a former town clerk and postmaster, and at the time of his death, was township clerk. The deceased was the son of George H. and Susan (Wing) Scofield, born at Strawberry Point on December 20, 1875, in the residence now occupied by his family.
He was educated in the public high school of Strawberry Point and graduated from the same. At the time of his death he was the third generation to conduct the general store in Strawberry Point which was established in 1862 and is one of the oldest, if not the oldest, business establishments in the state conducted by the same family.
Mr. Scofield was married to Miss Hannah Einwalter on November 8, 1905, at Fort Atkinson. To this union three children were born. His home life was ideal and his real interests were ever centered in his home.
Surviving are his widow, twin daughters, Dorothy and Margaret, at home, and one son, George, statistician in the county relief office here in Elkader. Four sisters and one brother also survive, as follows: Miss Mary Scofield, who makes her home with the family; Miss Georgia Scofield, Fort Dodge; Miss Bess Scofield, Chicago; Mrs. C. H. (Susan) Arnold and William Scofield of Portland, Oregon.
Funeral services were held in the Congregational church last Sunday afternoon, conducted by the Rev. James P. Gable, pastor of the Methodist church. Interment was made in the Strawberry Point cemetery.
