Clayton County Register, Thur., 7 Mar. 1935.

Guttenberg: Leonard Roth, local business man, died at the home of his sister, Mrs. Ben H. Nieland, in Guttenberg, on Friday evening, at 10:11 o'clock, at the age of 60 years and nine months, following an illness of a year's duration. Mr. Roth was born at Guttenberg May 31, 1874, a son of John and Magdalena Roth. The greater part of his ambitious life was spent here. He attended St. Mary's parochial school here. When a young man Mr. Roth served an apprenticeship in learning the cigar-maker's trade, which occupation he followed for many years, for some time being engaged in the cigar manufacturing business here and at Pierre, S.D. He also resided at Dubuque for a short time. When a young man, while at work, he had the misfortune to accidentally get his foot into a horse-power machine, which resulted in the loss of the leg. He also worked at the carpenter trade at one time. Mr. Roth was also a musician, playing the cornet, and for a number of years was a member of the Guttenberg band. Mr. Roth was a man of pleasing personality, which made him many friends during life. To know him was to like him. To do acts of kindness for those in need was his greatest pleasure in life at all times. During his illness he was a patient sufferer, and had hopes for recovery until the Angel of Death called him to the Great Beyond last Friday evening. All that loving hands could do and medical knowledge could suggest was done for him to save his life, but all to no avail. His death is deeply mourned by two brothers, Andrew Roth, of Guttenberg, and Ben Roth, of Dubuque; three sisters, Mesdames Henry Saeugling, Louis Frommelt and Ben H. Nieland, all of this place, and numerous other relatives and friends, by whom he will be sadly missed. He was a faithful member of St. Mary's church of Guttenberg, and the Holy Name Society.

Funeral Services were conducted by the Rev. Father J. A. Dupont at St. Mary's Catholic church here Monday morning, with interment in Mt. Olivet cemetery. The funeral was very largely attended by relatives and friends from far and near.
