Clayton County Register, Thur., 10 Jan. 1935.

Guttenberg: Funeral services for Rev. Jacob Buerkle, retired Lutheran minister, 79 years old, were held at St. John's American Lutheran church in Guttenberg on Saturday afternoon, with interment in the city cemetery. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. H. H. Diers, of Dubuque; Rev. J. Janzig, of Monona, and Rev. W. J. F. Adix, of Guttenberg. Rev. Buerkle passed away at his home here on Wednesday evening, Jan. 2, 1935, at 5:25 o'clock, following an illness of long duration.

Rev. Buerkle was born at Zeisenhausen, near Melonchtorstadt Bretten, in southern Germany, Aug 3, 1855, a son of Gottlieb and Katherine (Binder) Buerkle, where he received his early education. When two weeks old he was baptized at the Lutheran church at the place of his birth, and in 1870 he was confirmed in the Lutheran Faith. When a young man he was employed in Germany in institutions and hospitals of various kinds. He began his studies in Theology at Ludwigsburg, Schwaben, Germany. In 1885 he came to America, settling at Columbus, Ohio, where he resided for a year and a half, then going to Afton, Minn., where he completed his studies in theology, graduated and was ordained a minister of the Lutheran faith. He was a member of the first graduating class of the Lutheran seminary at Afton. After his graduation at Afton, his first charge was at Horine, Missouri. Later he had charge of Lutheran congregations at Bismark, N.D., Howard Lake, Druise, West Brook, Hornsby, Palmer, Cresco, Decoria and Good Thunder, Minn., and other places. Almost ten years ago he returned from the ministry. Rev. Buerkle was a tireless worker for true Christianity.

He was married at Morine, Missouri, to Miss Cassie Meisner, who preceded him in death on April 15, 1934.

After retiring from the ministry, Rev. Buerkle and family resided at Elkport and Littleport for a time, six years ago coming to Guttenberg to make their home, where deceased spent the remainder of his true Christian life.

He is survived by three daughters, Mrs. G. L. Matthiae, of Pine Island, Minn., and Mrs. F. E. Damm, of Elkport; one son, Paul Buerkle of Guttenberg; Five grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.

The funeral was largely attended by relatives and friends from far and near, which showed that deceased was held in high regard by all who knew him.

(Note: The article clearly states he was survived by three daughters but only two were named. The submitter has no explanation.)
