Guttenberg: Funeral services for Edward Harter, 79 years old, highly regarded pioneer resident of Clayton county, were conducted by the Rev. Father J. A. Dupont at St. Mary's Catholic church in Guttenberg on Saturday morning, with interment in St. Mary's cemetery. Mr. Harter passed away at his home here on Wednesday evening, Jan. 2, 1935, at 7:00 o'clock, after a long illness.
Mr. Harter was born at Wilkesbarre, Penn., on April 6, 1855, coming to Guttenberg when nine years old with his parents, and settling on a farm in Jefferson township. Fifty-two years ago he was married at Guttenberg to Miss Katherine Nieland, who preceded him in death on February 12, 1930. After their marriage the couple settled on a farm in Jefferson township, where they lived until 1887, when they came to Guttenberg to make their home, where he spent the remainder of his life. He retired from farm work when he came to Guttenberg to reside.
He is survived by one adopted daughter, Mrs. George Herman, of Guttenberg; one adopted son, John Harter, of Guttenberg; ten grandchildren; four brothers, Henry and Frank Harter, of Guttenberg, Charles Harter, of Marshfield, Wis.; and many other relatives and friends.
The funeral was largely attended by relatives and friends from far and near.
(Note: The article clearly states he was survived by four brothers but only three were named. Submitter has no explanation.)
