Early Pioneer Called To Eternal Home
Charles W. Dowing [sic], son of Hiram and Charlotte Downing, was born April 1, 1851, in Giard Township on a farm near Monona, Iowa. On March 8, 1937, after failing years and a short illness he passed away at the McGregor Hospital, making his age 85 years, 11 months and 8 days.
He lived on a farm near Monona until he he [sic] was 57 years of age, at which time he moved to Monona where he spent his remaining years.
On June 6, 1872, he was united in marriage to Sarah Williams. To this union were born six children, two of whom preceded their father in death.
He was one of our few remaining pioneers in this vicinity. As we pause in reverence today, we must realize that as the years pass on, these pioneers will have gone to their reward and soon will be to us, but a memory.
The deceased was a member of the Monona M.E. Church for 57 years.
His wife preceded him in death on Jan. 24, 1926. Two children, Leslie on Sept. 15, 1918, and Emma on Jan. 28, 1921; three brothers, Henry, Hiram and John preceded him in death.
He leaves to mourn his death four sons: Claude of Marquette, Dell of Castalia, Ray at home, and Leonard of McGregor; one sister, Mrs. ME. Thurston, of Rockford, Ill. Also a number of grandchildren and many relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held from the M.E. Church, Wednesday, Mar. 10th, at 2:30 P.M., Rev. G.W. Turner officiating. Burial was made in Monona I.O.O.F. cemetery.
