From the Thurs., 4 Mar. 1936 issue of the “Clayton County Register” (Elkader, IA), page 3, column 5:
MRS. DOROTHEA MILLER
Mrs. Dorothea Miller, of Monona, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Wm. H. Fette, two miles west of Elkader, at 1:30 a. m., Sunday, March 1st.
Mrs. Miller had been living with her daughter since 1934. She has been in failing health since March 20, the same year.
The deceased was born Nov. 2, 1859, in Garnavillo township, this county, the daughter of Fred and Wilhelmina (Hoppe) Meier. She spent part of her life in Minnesota but in 1916 returned to Clayton county spend the remainder of his life here.
In the year 1880 she was united in marriage to Marcus Bessmann at Owatonna, Minn. He died in 1908 and after eight years of widowhood, in 1916, she was married to Karl Miller of Monona. Her second husband died in the year 1927.
Mrs. Miller was the mother of ten children—six sons and four daughters. Three of the sons died in infancy to leave seven children to mourn her passing, as follows:
Helene, Mrs. Wm. H. Fette, Elkader; Henry Bessmann, Waseca, Minn.; William Bessmann, Waseca, Minn.; August Bessmann, Blooming Prairie, Minn.; Emma, Mrs. Gust Carlach, Owatonna, Minn.; Matilda, Mrs. Herman Lebahn, Winfred, S. D.; Alma, Mrs. Harry Hagemann, Winfred, S. D. Besides these she is survived by 32 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren and two sisters, namely, Mrs. Henry Kutzbach, Farmersburg, and Mrs. John Hoth, Elkader.
She received her early education in the rural schools of this county and in the church school at Clayton Center, where she was confirmed by Pastor Seifert in 1874.
Mrs. Miller was a member of the Evangelical Lutheran church of Our Redeemer. Funeral services were held this afternoon with burial in the cemetery near Meriden, Minn., the Rev. E. L. Stuempfig officiating. Casketbearers were Albert, Jonard, Erwin and Walther Fette, Elmer Schroeder and Louis Kutzbach.
