Clayton County Register, Thur., 3 Jan. 1935.
Guttenberg: Mrs. Michael Zapf (nee Josephine Futer) one of Clayton county's life-long residents and worthy mothers, passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. C. W. Palmer, here on Tuesday morning at eight o'clock, at the age of 73 years, seven months and 19 days, following a several months' illness. Mrs. Zapf was born on a farm in Volga township, Clayton county, on May 12, 1861. On Feb. 15, 1878, she was married to Mr. Michael Zapf, who preceded her in death on April 30, 1931. In 1928 Mr. and Mrs. Zapf celebrated their golden anniversary. For 49 years the family resided on a farm in Volga township, later going to Elkport to make their home. After the death of her husband, Mrs. Zapf came to Guttenberg to make her home with her daughter, Mrs. C. W. Palmer, and family. She was a faithful member of the Catholic church. To do kind acts for her family and friends was her greatest pleasure in life at all times. To Know her was to like and respect her, and her memories will be forever cherished by all. Her death is deeply mourned by three sons, Hubert A., of Garnavillo, Albert, of Guttenberg, and John, of Volga township; one daughter, Mrs. C. W. Palmer, of Guttenberg; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Alee (or Alec) Meyer of Garber; and numerous other relatives and friends, by whom this good and true Christian woman will be sadly missed. Funeral services will be conducted by the Rev. Father J. A. Dupont at St. Mary's Catholic church in Guttenberg on Friday morning at nine o'clock, with interment in Mt. Olivet cemetery. One son also preceded the mother in death.
