Emma Bertha Schmidt died Dec. 1 at the state hospital after an illness of two weeks, of arteriosclerosis.
She was the daughter of William and Katherine Brenner Lemke and was born March 22, 1866, in Cox Creek township. At the time of her death she had reached the age of 83 years, eight months and nine days.
She was baptized and confirmed in the Zion Evangelical Lutheran church at Clayton Center on April 6, 187_ (looks like 1878 or 1879), by the Rev. F. W. Seifert. She was a lifelong member of that church. She also was a member of its Ladies Aid since its beginning Jan. 9, 1898.
She was educated in the Denmark rural school.
On March 27, 1885, she was married to Julius John Schmidt at Clayton Center. Two children were born to this union, Hattie, Mrs. Albert Engelhardt of Farmersburg, and Arthur Schmidt of Elkader.
Survivors are the above named children; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Mrs. Minnie Schmidt and Mrs. Amelia Lenth of Elkader, and her twin, Mrs. Lena Lenth of Postville.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Julius, on Feb. 17, 1935; her parents; and two brothers, Henry and William Lemke; and one sister, Mrs. Ida Lenth.
Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 5, at 1:30 at the Witt funeral chapel in Elkader and at 2 o'clock from the Zion Evangelical Lutheran church at Clayton Center with the Rev. J. H. Zerhusen officiating. Burial was in the new Clayton Center cemetery.
Pallbearers were Lester Engelhardt, Clarence Engelhardt, Orval Engelhardt, Herbert Lenth, Levern Schmidt, and Arno Schmidt.
