Philip Benjamin Leuchtenmacher, youngest son of John B. and Lydia Leuchtenmacher, was born in Highland township, Clayton county, on Feb. 28, 1903, and died at the Postville hospital Aug. 11, 1949, at the age of 46 years, five months and 14 days.
He had been failing in health for some time but it was not until the last few days that he became seriously ill and was rushed to the hospital early Tuesday morning. He seemed to be recovering until he suffered a heart attack Thursday evening and died suddenly.
He was baptized and confirmed in the Highland Lutheran church and was a member of the Marion Lutheran church at the time of his death.
On Sept. 29, 1926, he was married to Ida Johnson of Gunder. One son, Louis, was born to them.
He received his early education in schools of Highland township and later attended auto mechanic's school at Kansas City, Mo. He was employed at the Allen Motor Co. at Elkader for 18 years. When his health began to fail he left the garage work to take up farming. In 1942 he and his family moved to a farm near Gunder, which had been his home since.
Preceding him in death were his parents and one brother, Matthew.
Surviving are his wife and son; two sisters, Mrs. Don Goodrich of Santa Barbara, Calif., and Mrs. Ada Olson of Elkader; and three brothers, John of Mederville, Roy and George of Elgin; besides a large number of other relatives and friends.
Pall bearers were: John Breitsprecher, John Rugland, Philman Peterson, Francis West, Albert Gulsvig and Olvin Olson. Flower bearers were: Gerene, Rose Marie, Karen Ann and Junior Larson.
He was buried in the Marion cemetery.
