Funeral services for Bernard W. Muench, 81, were held at St. Joseph church, Elkader, at 9:30 o'clock Monday morning, July 11. The Rev. Jerald Blackburn officiated. Burial was in St. Joseph's cemetery.

Mr. Muench died at his farm home in Boardman township early Friday morning, July 8. He had been in failing health for the past four years but was up and about until a couple of days before his death. Death was due to a heart condition and the infirmaties of old age.

Bernard Muench was born at Westfalen, Germany, Feb. 23, 1868, the son of William and Bernardina Dickerhoff (or Diekerhoff) Muench. He came with his parents to this country in 1881. The family came to Clayton county and settled on a farm in Boardman township, where the children attended rural school near their home, having received their earlier education in Germany.

On Feb. 13, 1912, at St. Joseph's church in Elkader, Mr. Muench was married to Miss Clara Rothmeyer. Three sons were born to this union, William and Joseph, both on the home farm, and Leo, who died in June, 1930.

Mr. Muench was a member of St. Joseph church, Elkader.

He is survived by his wife and two sons; two granddaughters, Shirley and Kay Muench; a brother and a sister, William Muench and Mrs. Otto Gusta, both of Elkader.

Preceding him in death besides his son Leo was a sister, Mrs. Josephine Heck, of Guttenberg, and a brother, Henry, and two brothers who died in infancy.

Pallbearers were Leo Kelleher, Harold Downey, Harry Hubbard, Earl Sterling, Francis and John Stence.

Relatives from a distance who attended the funeral were: Mrs. Bertha Huber, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Slowey, and Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Slowey, Yankton, S.D.; Dr. and Mrs. G. M. Thein, Oelwein; Fred Thein, Garber; Frank Thein, Williamstown; Mr. and Mrs. Russell Jones and daughter, Wadena; Mr. and Mrs. Henry Ortman, Elkport; Mr. and Mrs. Lou Dennler, Elgin; Mr. and Mrs. Bill Jones, Lamont; Charles and Mary Oelberg, Wadena.
