After a lingering illness of many months, Wm. Ormsby Erwin* passed away from earth on the early morning of June 15th, 1916. He began life in the community where he died; was born on a farm just east of Monona on November 1st, 1850*, and was therefore in his sixty-sixth year.
He was the son of Wm. and Catherine Erwin, being one of the younger children of a family of eight, and the first to break the family circle. Two of them, Mrs. Bessie Faulke, and Mrs. Margaret Dinning, live on the Pacific coast, and were not able to be present at the funeral. The other five, Mrs. Ellen Clifford, Kate, Mary, James and Belle, reside at Monona.
The earlier life of the deceased was spent at home, but during midlife some years were passed in various occupations in Minnesota and the Dakotas. Honesty and uprightness characterized his life. He was of a friendly disposition and well known.
The funeral was held from the Methodist Church, of which he was a member, on June 17th, 1916, and the body laid away in Monona Cemetery.
~Elkader Register & Argus, June 29, 1916 (Monona correspondence)
