Heinrich Christian Bentien was born August 23, 1843, in Grinau, Luebeck, Germany. In 1873 he was married to Christine Carlson. Eleven years later he emigrated to Luana, Iowa in August of the same year he moved to Grand Meadow and two years later back again to Luana. During the years 1888-1910 he lived in Giard Township on a 50 acre farm. From 1910 to the close of his life he had his home in Monona.
In 1871 he had been admitted to the journeymanship of a mason or bricklayer. As a bricklayer he served the public in this country and by it he earned a living for himself and family, until old age forced him to retire.
He is the father of four sons and five daughters. In August 1903 his eldest son Gottfried was accidently killed. Two years ago last February he mourned over the loss of his [?daughter], Mrs. Klotz
He was baptized August 28, 1843; later on he received the customary instructions in religion, and by confirmation was admitted to the communicant membership of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Monona, Iowa.
He departed from this life Wednesday evening about 8’O clock. Towards evening on the day he informed his wife he was not feeling well, but there seemed to be no reason for alarm. However it was the approach of God’s messenger to call him out from time to eternity. May he have found him prepared to meet his God.
Funeral Services were conducted at his Church, Sunday, October 21, P.M. His body was laid to rest in the Monona Cemetery.
Mourners are his wife, eight children, Earnest Bentien, Monona, Iowa; Lizzie Hack, Sumner, Iowa; Hanna Fick, Monona, Iowa; Dora Sargent , Little Falls, Minn; August Bentien, Monona, Iowa; Martha Engelhardt, Monona, Iowa ; Henry Bentien, Spencer, South Dakota ; Mabel Moyer, Monona, their families, 26 grandchildren and five great - grandchildren.
Those from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. John Hack, and family of Sumner, Iowa; Henry Bentien of Spencer, S.D.; Mrs. Bert Sargent and baby of Little Falls, Minn.; Helmuth Bentien of Dubuque, Iowa; Mrs. E. Grimm of New Hampton, Iowa; Herman Klotz and family of Fredericksburg, Iowa

We desire to extend our most sincere thanks to the neighbors and friends for their help and sympathy extended in our recent bereavement; especially to those who so willingly helped at the burial; for the many beautiful flowers; to the Choir and words of sympathy spoken by the minister.
