Funeral services for Mrs. Karen Johansen, 75, were held at 1 o'clock Wednesday afternoon from the Harvey Christofferson residence in Postville to the Marion Lutheran church at Gunder at 2 o'clock.
The Rev. S. J. Strandjord officiated. The Rev. Ludwig of the Postville Lutheran church assisted at the residence. Burial was in the Marion cemetery.
Mrs. Johansen died early Monday morning, Feb. 28, at her home in Postville. She had been in comparatively good health until two months ago and for the past three weeks had been confined to her bed. She had reached the age of 75 years, seven months and five days.
Karen Johanna Jorgensen was born in Horsens, Denmark, July 23, 1873, the daughter of Niels and Susanna Jorgensen. She received her early education in the schools of her native country, and was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith.
She came to this country in 1893 and on October of that same year was married to John C. Johansen. Seven children were born to them. They made their home on a farm near Hawkeye, until 1912, when they moved to a farm near Gunder. Her husband died in 1935, and in 1945 she moved to Postville.
Mrs. Johansen was a member of the Marion Lutheran church and of Bergen Ladies Aid.
She is survived by six children; namely, Carl of Elkader; Henry, Mrs. Lorence (Emma) Reinhardt, and Mrs. Harvey (Elsa) Christofferson, all of Postville; Mrs. Lloyd (Mary) Ostlie, and John C. Johansen, both of Waterloo; also 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, a number of nieces and nephews and several cousins in Denmark.
Preceding her in death besides her husband were; a daughter, Eleanor, who died in infancy; one brother, Jorgen Jorgensen; and one sister, Elsa Marie Jorgensen.
Pallbearers were Louis Ostlie, Lorence E. Reinhardt, John E. Johansen, Gary E. Johansen, Elbe Christofferson and Albert Bachhaus.
Among those from a distance who attended the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Frank Wiley, Carl and Eva Palmer, Paul Johansen and daughters Eva and Pauline, Mr. and Mrs. Howard Johansen, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Johansen, Mr. and Mrs. Max Matt and daughters, and Miss Sena Lauridsen, all of West Union; Mrs. Howard Martin and Bruce of Pittsburgh, Pa.; Mr. and Mrs. Carl Johansen and John, Fred and Harry Bente, Mrs. Harry Miller and Mrs. Ray Leete, all of Elkader; Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Ostlie and family, and John C. Johansen, all of Waterloo; Mrs. Ellen Johansen and family of Lamont.
