Funeral services were held for Laura Mabel Rosena Powell, 79, Sunday, Jan. 2, 1994, at Peace United Church of Christ, Elkader. Rev. Lance A. Bentley officiated the service with burial in East Side Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers were Glen Gifford, John Wildman, Melvin Glesne and Eugene Miller. Pallbearers were Merle Honn, Bill Honn, Grant Miller, Roger Honn, Valdean Palas and Russell Pate.
Laura Powell was born on a farm north of Luana, Iowa, July 16, 1914, the daughter of Henry and Freda (Schroeder) Honn. She was baptized as an infant in the Lutheran Church at Luana, and confirmed August 28, 1928, in the Lutheran Church at Monona. At the age of two, her family moved to Monona, where she received her education. She graduated from Monona High School in 1931. On November 7, 1937, she was united in marriage to Claude Powell at Ethan, S.D. They lived in Kennebec, S.D., for five years where her husband worked for the railroad. They also spent a couple of years in Sanborn, Iowa, moving to Elkader in 1945. Laura worked at various jobs in Elkader including 16 years with the Clayton County Auditor's office. She is a past 50 year Order of the Eastern Star member, and a long time member of the Royal Neighbors. She has also been a long time member of the Peace United Church of Christ and the Women's Fellowship. Laura Powell died at her home in Elkader Wednesday, Dec. 29, 1993.
Survivors include her daughter Cheryl (Mrs. David) Heltne of Katy, Texas; three grandsons, Mike Powell of St. Louis, Mo., Adam Powell of Minneapolis, Minn., and Jason Heltne of Katy, Texas; and a granddaughter, Julie Heltne of Katy, Texas.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1981; her son Dr. Kent Powell in November of 1993; her parents; five sisters; and three brothers.
