David J. Childers as born at Galena, Ill., Sept. 23, 1843, and died Oct. 19th, 1909. He was 66 years and 26 days old at the time of his death.
When he was twenty-years of age he enlisted in Company E*, of the Illinois Infantry and served as a volunteer during the Civil war.
In 1868 he was married to Maria Surdiman. To this until were born two children, Charles E. and Fletcher F.
In 1883 he married Hannah J. Collins, and to this union seven children were born, Mrs. Carrie Farmer, Joseph, Solomon, Hannah, Nellie and Ruth, and one child which died in infancy.
He leaves his wife and two sisters, Mrs. Katie Massy and Passie Childers, of Warren, Ill, and one brother, Solomon Childers, of Ely, Minn.
David Childers came to Strawberry Point in 1885, where he lived until 1888, moving onto a farm northeast of town, where he has since resided.
He was a kind and loving father and a good husband, and will be missed by a large circle of relatives and friends.
The funeral was held Thursday morning in the Christian church by Rev. Piper, of Strawberry Point. His remains were followed by a large concourse of sympathizing friends and laid to rest in the Strawberry Point cemetery.
