Louis Meyer was born on Oct. 2nd, 1834, in Destel Westphalia, Germany, as the eldest child of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Meyer. In 1854, on April 15th, he left Germany and arrived at Guttenberg on July 15th of the same year.
On July 5th, 1861, he was united in marriage to miss Elizabeth Moellering. This union was blessed with seven children, two of whom preceded the parents in death; Marie at the age of 4, and Mrs. Margaret on Feb. 5th, 189_ (looks like 1 or 4). On August 3rd, 1921, the wife and mother passed away, soon after they had celebrated the 60th wedding anniversary.
Mr. Meyer bought the farm, which has been his home for more than 63 years, in 1862. Industry, faithfulness and honesty were virtues by which he guided his life. He was a member of St. Paul's church practically from its beginning and served in many ___________ positions on the church council. About four weeks ago he was taken sick with bronchitis and gradually grew weaker until he passed away on Sunday afternoon, Nov. 16th, at the age of 90 years, 1 month and 14 days.
Deceased leaves three sons and two daughters; Louis of Clayton township, Mrs. Wilhelmina Kregel of Garnavillo, Henry of La Mars, John of Farmersburg township, and Mrs. Elizabeth Meyer of Garnavillo township; 22 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at St. Paul's church on Wednesday afternoon, Rev. Braun officiating. Interment in the new cemetery.
