Elkader Register, Thur., 18 Sept. 1924.
L. L. Hulverson, for many years one of our highly respected and esteemed citizens, passed away at the family home, Sunday evening, September 14th, at 5:45. Mr. Hulverson had been suffering from ulcers of the stomach for some time.
Lars L. Hulverson was born on a farm in Read Twp., Clayton County, Iowa, Sept. 22nd 1860. There his childhood and school days were spent. As he enjoyed the out-door life, he remained on the farm for several years, until he was called by the County Board of Supervisors as Supt. of the Clayton County Insane Asylum, in which capacity he served the county faithfully at different periods for twenty-six years. He was a careful, painstaking steward for the poor unfortunate inmates of that institution, only to resign each time against the wishes of the Board, who had employed him and had unreserved confidence in his ability. In his work he was ably assisted by his faithful wife, Isabelle, nee Thompson, who, after a lingering illness, preceded him in death a number of years ago. To this union four children were born: Mrs. J. W. Downie and Mrs. J. W. Stoops, of Elkader, Iowa; George of Finley, N. Dakota; and Lawrence, of Volga, Iowa, who now mourn the loss of a loving father.
Realizing the need of a helpmate in the home and his special work as steward he was fortunate to find what he needed in Miss Mary L. Lembke, to whom he was married Sept. 12th, 1911. The years of their married life gave evidence of the fact that he had chosen wisely. One daughter, Mary Louise, was born to this union, who, with her mother will sadly miss a kind and affectionate father and husband.
Mr. Hulverson always enjoyed comparatively good health, until of late years ulcers of the stomach would cause considerable pain and distress at times, but after a few days of rest and special medical treatment, he could and would be about as usual. It was on Monday afternoon, Sept. 8th, that he was taken with a sudden and violent, almost unbearable pain. The family doctor who was at his bedside within a short time constituted perforation, caused by the opening of an ulcer. As no operation could be performed on account of the serious condition of the patient, he was made as comfortable as possible by the untiring efforts of his faithful wife, who was constantly at his bedside, and by a trained nurse who was called to assist. Realizing his serious condition he longed for and received the Lord's Supper on Friday evening. Thus refreshed and strengthened for the last part of life's journey, he arrived at the desired home station of life, Sunday evening, Sept. 14th, at 5:45 o'clock; his earthly pilgrimage having covered a period of 63 years, 11 months and 22 days.
For fourteen years Mr. Hulverson was a member of the Town Council, retiring last April. He was at the time of his death a director of the First National Bank. He was affiliated with the A.F. & A.M. and the M.W.A. In the years to come his many friends and good neighbors will ever and again miss the man upon whom they would never call in vain whenever assistance was needed. He fully deserved and enjoyed the confidence and respect of his fellow citizens, for the sound advice and untiring service he was ever ready and willing to give. But above all will he be missed by those nearest and dearest to him, his faithful wife and children. They know best, realize and appreciate what the now departed has been to them. With them his departure is mourned by nine grandchildren; one brother, Gilbert Hulverson of St. Olaf, Iowa; and three sisters, Mrs. Hans Nelson, also of St. Olaf, Mrs. Evanston and Mrs. Agnes Larson of Miller, Iowa; other relatives and a host of good friends and neighbors.
Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. at the late home and at 2:00 o'clock at the Evangelical church, Rev. Franke officiating. The Woodmen and Masonic lodges attended the funeral in a body. The Masonic lodge having charge of the funeral services at the grave. Burial in the East Side cemetery.
