Elkader Register, Thur., 3 July 1924.
The deepest sympathy of our community is with Mr. and Mrs. James F. Fitzpatrick whose baby boy "Jackie" died at Finley hospital, Dubuque, at 2:10 p.m. Tuesday, following an operation for the removal of an open safety pin which he had swallowed.
Shortly after eight o'clock Monday evening as Mrs. Fitzpatrick was undressing the baby for bed, he grabbed an open safety pin, thrust it in his mouth and swallowed it. Dr. W. J. McGrath was summoned and it was decided to take the little one to Dubuque at once in the hope that the pin could be reached and removed with special instruments.
At Finley hospital the surgeons worked for some time to remove the pin thru the mouth but finally an operation to get it through the side of the throat was considered necessary and the pin removed in that way. However, the strain of the efforts to remove the pin and the shock of the operation resulted in pneumonia and Jackie breathed his last Tuesday afternoon.
John Charles Fitzpatrick was the second son of James and Helen Fitzpatrick and was born December 13th, 1922. He is survived by his parents and one brother, James Jr., who is four years old today.
His remains were brought back to Elkader Tuesday evening and the funeral services were held at 10:00 o'clock Wednesday forenoon from St. Joseph's church, Rev. Father Taken officiating.
As a result of the shock and strain of the past few days Mrs. Fitzpatrick is prostrated and seriously ill.
