Elkader Register, Thur., 8 May 1924. Garber column.

On last Friday afternoon about 2:35 p.m. one of the saddest accidents that ever occurred in this vicinity happened on the railroad bridge 1/2 mile west of town, when the afternoon train accidently struck Father Minogue, who was caught on the bridge at the time, knocking him off the pier to the river bed below. His head struck a rock causing almost instant death. The engineer of the train was the only witness to the accident and at the inquest held Saturday by coroner Berman of Guttenberg stated that Father Minogue was standing on the pier, fully clear of the track and train, and was holding a dog in his arms. He had blown the whistle and this evidently scared the dog, who sprang from his arms as the train approached on the track. He thought to pull the dog off the track. He was leaning close enough to the track for the cylinder head of the engine to strike his shoulder, knocking him to the river bed with fatal results. The train was stopped within a car length and a half and the body picked up by the train crew and brought back to Garber. Medical attention was secured at once, but to no avail as he had passed away. He was still breathing when picked up, but never regained consciousness. A coroners inquest was held Saturday and the testimony of the train crew taken. The following jurors were selected, Mr. Phelan, P. J. Cassidy and M. J. O'Connor. The verdict was accidental death.

The fureral services for Father Minogue were held (next few words blurred) o'clock at St. Michael's church. The entire community were preset, besides large numbers from all surrounding towns. About 70 priests were present. Arch Bishop Keane of Dubuque delivered the funeral sermon. The remains were taken to Dubuque and laid at rest at Mount Olivet cemetery accompanied by large number of his parishioners. Father Minogue has been resident Pastor here for over twenty-five years and in that time had endeared himself to one and all and the community has lost one of its best friends. One that has always stood for the advancement best good of all. Father Minogue was 61 years, 5 months of age at the time of his death and had no near relatives in this country. May he rest in peace.
