The death of Mr. Joseph Auer occurred at his home near Garnavillo at 2 o'clock Tuesday morning February 26th. After a brief illness of one week. His sudden death was a shock to his family and his attending physician who felt certain that his illness was nothing serious. He received most tender care in his last illness from his daughter Celesta. He was born at the old home in Garnavillo township December 5th, 1855, being at the time of his death 68 years, two months and 21 days. April 22nd, 1884, he was married to Miss Sarah Jane Fallor. This union was blessed with five children: Mrs. F. M. Homan of Garnavillo; John Joseph and Mary Celesta residing at home; Mrs. Ben Berns of McGregor; and Mrs. Otto Beck of Elkader. Mr. Auer was a devoted member of the Catholic church throughout his life. He was a good true and industrious man, honest and upright in all his dealings. He was a good neighbor, and held in the highest esteem by all who knew him. Those left to mourn his loss are his beloved wife and his wife's respective children; five grandchildren, too young to realize the loss of a loving grandfather; one brother, Ed Auer of Garnavillo; one sister, Mrs. Theresa Schaeffers of Monona; and a host of relatives and friends. The funeral services were held from St. Joseph's church at Garnavillo at 10:00 a.m. Thursday with Rev. Father Raedler officiating. After the service the funeral proceeded to the cemetery where his remains were laid in a bault (vault ?).
May his soul rest in peace.
His pallbearers were his three sons-in-law and his nephews. The funeral was well attended. Those from out of town present were Louis Claus of Dubuque, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Donahue and daughter Irene of Elkader.
