F. W. Cummings* was born Jan. 2, 1841, at Danville, Ill., and passed away at the home of his son Frances at Volga, Iowa, Dec. 27th, 1923, five days before his 83rd birthday. He was the eldest son of Frederick Goodrich and Sophia Douglas Cummings. His parents were among the first settlers of this community settling here in 1847. He was united in marriage to Serena Butler who passed away six weeks later. On October 19, 1879, he was again united in marriage to Sarah J. Robinson. To this union were born eight children. His wife, one son, Roy, and two daughters, Mrs. Lizzie Jellings and Mrs. Gertie Walter preceded him in death. Those left to mourn his departure are Mrs. Alice Voshell, Mrs. Helen Nydeggar, Owen D., Donald Rand, Francis G.; also fifteen grandchildren. Mr. Cummings has been a member of the Masonic order for over sixty years being a member in good standing during this time. He was one of the eldest Masons in the state. At an early age he united with the Freewill Baptist Church; later he was a member of the Christian church of this place and later of the Methodist church of this place. Mr. Cummings died not thirty rods from where the log house stood, that was his home 76 years ago. He was the eldest settler in the township. His funeral was held from the Presbyterian church in Volga Saturday afternoon. Rev. J. M. Jennings preached the sermon and the interment was in Hill Crest Cemetery.
