Alvin A. Johanningmeier

Alvin Johanningmeier died Saturday, July 25 at Northgate Manor, Waukon.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 28, 1987 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Monona at 11 a.m. Rev. Harold O. Ward officiating.

Alvin A. Johanningmeier was born December 1, 1892 in Monona Twp., Clayton County, Iowa, to Charles and Mary Schrader Johanningmeier. He was baptized Dec. 17, 1892 in Monona Twp. and confirmed March 24, 1907 at St. John's Lutheran Church, Luana. He received his education at the Evergreen country school.

October 16, 1918 he married Amanda Backhaus at her family home in Grand Meadow Twp. They had five children. The couple farmed until their retirement in Monona in 1960. Alvin remained in his home until entering Northgate Manor, Waukon in 1980.

Preceding him in death were his wife, Amanda, June 14, 1985; a son, Leo, April 19, 1929; 5 brothers, Wesley, Werner, Roy, William and Elmer and one sister, Florence.

Surviving are 2 sons, Alene, New Orleans, LA, Keith, Decorah; 2 daughters, Arlene Sass, Luana and Maxine Borton, St. Louis, MO.; 13 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren and one brother, Arlo, McGregor.

Burial was in St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery. Schultz's Funeral Home, Monona in charge of services.

Pallbearers were Jerome Sass, James Sass, Ronald Sass, Robert Sass, Richard Sass and Greg Johnanningmeier (sic).

Postville Herald newspaper clipping, hand dated 1987, from my mother's obituary collection.
