Homer Smith, living on the Collins place in Monona township committed suicide this Thursday morning. For some time he has been financially embarrassed and his creditors have pushed their claims with considerable vigor. To this fact is attributed the cause of his suicide. He held the revolver to his forehead, and pulled the trigger; the ball passed through the brain and lodged in the back of the head. He lived for several hours thereafter. He leaves a wife to mourn his untimely taking-off.

~Elkader Register, Thursday morning, Nov. 28, 1878; Town and County page.

Note: buried in Monona City cemetery, his wife's name was Mary
