Thursday, 18 January 1917, Guttenberg Press, p1, c1:

Another Pioneer Called By Death.

On Monday morning, January 15, 1917, when John Walke went to the home of his father, Herman Henry Walke, to visit him, he was shocked to find him dead in bed. Dr. Duffin was at once called, who stated that the cause of his death was due to heart trouble. Mr. Walke had not been ill, and therefore his sudden death was a shock to his many relatives and friends. The body was taken to the home of his son John, where funeral services were held on Wednesday morning, Rev. K. Wm. Braun, of Garnavillo, officiating, after which the body was taken to the church at Ceres, where funeral services were again held. Interment was made in the Ceres Cemetery. The funeral was largely attended, which showed that deceased was held in high regard by all who knew him. Herman Henry Walke was born in Hanover, Germany, on February 7, 1840 and therefore had reached the ripe old age of 76 years, 11 months and 8 days at the time of his death. On May 27, 1854, he came to Jefferson township, Clayton County, Iowa, where he was engaged in farming for many years, later coming to Guttenberg to reside, where he lived until his death with the exception of a few years, when he made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Anna Hawkins, at Bay Point, California. He was also engaged in business at Guttenberg for a time. On October 2, 1863, he was married here to Miss Margaret Schroeder, who preceded him in death 18 years ago. Mr. Walke was a kind and true father and friend. Of late he had been occupying rooms in the former City Hotel building. His death is deeply mourned by two sons, John and Louis, of Guttenberg, three daughters, Mrs. Frank Saeugling and Mrs. Minnie Schutte, of Guttenberg, and Mrs. Anna Hawkins, of Bay Point, California, a number of grandchildren and a large number of other relatives and friends by whom he will be sadly missed. Three children also preceded him in death, namely, Herman, who died 11 years ago, and Rudolph, Margaret and an infant [sic], who passed away a number of years ago.
