Elkader Register, Thur., 9 Aug. 1906.
About 7:30 o'clock Saturday evening last, death came suddenly to John Adam Walther. He had not been feeling well, and while uptown that evening complained of pains in his back. On arriving home he announced that he was feeling worse and desired to go to bed. The family was alarmed and Dr. McGrath was summoned, but the end came from heart failure before medical assistance came.
John Adam Walther was born Aug. 29, 1846, in Unteralba, Saxony, Germany, where he spent his youth and early manhood and learned the wagonmaker's trade. He was married in 1868 to Christina Kohlerman. In 18__ (looks like 1883) he came, with his family, to this country, residing first at Clermont, later at Elgin and Mederville and twenty years ago they came to Elkader, where they have since lived, Mr. Walther working at his trade. His wife, five daughters, Mrs. Anna Huebner, of Grand Meadow twp.; Mrs. Marie Falb, of Elgin; Mrs. Lena Smith, of Boardman twp.; Amelia and Emma, of Elkader, and one son, William, also at home, are living to mourn his death. He also leaves ten grandchildren and one brother, living in Hessen Cassel, Germany.
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the Congregational church, Rev. Leonhard and Rev. Hock officiating. At the cemetery the Yeoman lodge, of which Mr. Walther was a beneficiary member, took charge of the services.
