V. E. (John) Bunting, 88, a resident of Montgomery, Ala., died Sunday, September 5, 2001, at his residence, John Knox Tower.

Mr. Bunting was a survivor of the attack on Pearl Harbor, December 7, 1941, and retired after 20 years service in the U.S. Navy.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 33 years, Phyllis Clark Bunting, originally of Randalia, Ia.

Survivors include his daughter, Lynne B. Jones and her husband, Gary, of Wetumpka, Ala.; his son, John L. Bunting, and wife, Martha, of Crestview; grandchildren, Thomas Jones of Chicago, Il, Darcy Jones, of Santa Rosa Beach, Fla., Matthew Bunting, and Leslie Kincaid and husband, of Pensacola; great grandchildren, Simon and Sebastian Kincaid, of Pensacola; special nieces, Arlene Doeppke, Ivadean Doeppke, Lavon Meyers, of Elkader, Ia, Ellen Banse, and husband, Jack, of Walford, Ia.; sister-in-law, Charlotte Heber, of Cedar Falls, Ia.; and many friends at John Knox Retirement Tower.

A military ceremony will be held later at Barrancas National Cemetery in Pensacola.
Another ceremony will be held in Elkader, Ia. at the Family Plot in East Side Cemetery.

Brooks-Cargile Funeral Home, 3154 Highland Ave., Montgomery, Ala., (334) 271-4404, is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials can be made to the Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches, Inc., Boys Ranch, Fla. 32060; John Knox Tower, 4401 Narrow Lane Road, Montgomery, Ala. 36116; or the WWII Memorial Fund, in care of the Clayton County Register Newspaper, Elkader, Ia. 52043.

This my father's obit from a couple of years ago. Although his name was Valmah, everyone called him John. He grew up in Elkader and left around 1940 when he joined the US Navy. Upon retirement from the USN in 1960, he lived in Pensacola, FL until shortly before his death.
