Elkader Register, Thur., 19 July 1906. Garnavillo News column.
Mrs. Christina Gruetzmacher, nee Loudan, was born May 27, 1832, in Laasau, Mecklenburg, Germany. At the age of twenty-five she was married to Henry Gruetzmacher, who preceded her in death in 1904. Mr. and Mrs. Gruetzmacher emigrated to this country in 1868 and lived for several years in Farmersburg township before coming to Garnavillo to reside. Of the nine children born to this union the following survive: Mrs. Henry Gerloff, of Farmersburg; William, of Bolan; Arthur, also a resident of Farmersburg; and John and Mary, of Garnavillo.
Considering her advanced age, deceased has been in seemingly good health and even the evening before her death enjoyed a ride on the ocean wave and was merry with her friends. The following Saturday morning she was found dead in her bed, but showed no evidence of struggle. It is thought that paralysis of the heart was the immediate cause of death.
Mrs. Gruetzmacher was well thought of by the community and will be greatly missed by her friends.
The funeral services were held Monday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Mall. Interment took place in the family lot in the new cemetery. The floral offerings were beautiful, among them being a design contributed by the Frauen Verein, of St. Peter's church, of which deceased was a member. Rest to her mortal being and peace to her soul.
