The following news articles were collected by the transcriber during the course of researching another Marquette man. They are being posted with the obituary in the hope that they will be useful to another researcher:

McGregor - Dick Schott, 18 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Bert Schott of Marquette, received an appointment to West Point last week. Dick is a freshman at the University of Iowa. He seemed to take such an interest in his military work, that one of his instructors asked him if he would be interested in going to West Point. This was a complete surprise to the boy, but on that advice he took the examinations at Mason City during the semester holidays. Two weeks ago he received the report of these tests, and passed them satisfactorily. Then Thursday came the crowning surprise, for with the tests came the appointment. This is an unusual method of gaining entrance to our army school, for it usually requires a "pull". Dick has attained his entrance on merit only. No date is set, but it is expected that he will go east at the close of the University the first of June.

Marquette - Richard B. Schott, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bert Schott of Marquette, has received final confirmation from Washington for his admission to the U.S. Military academy. Graduated from Marquette high school with the class of '39, he entered the University of Iowa, as an engineering student last fall. His final mental and physical tests having been passed satisfactorily, he will leave in June for West Point.

Marquette, Ia. - Richard Schott, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bert Schott of Marquette, was at home here Friday from West Point Military Academy to recuperate from injuries received during a disturbance at the World's Fair in New York while a group of cadets were giving a rifle squad demonstration.

Richard said he was one of a number of cadets who had earned a trip and week's visit to the Fair on their marksmanship record and were to give daily exhibition drills on the fairgrounds. "We had just completed our first drill," he said, "and the band had struck up 'God Bless America,' when a gang of about 200 attacked us with pop bottles, bricks, rocks, and sticks, injuring eight seriously."

Richard and his roommate, Tommy Owens of Feryston, Ga., were among those injured. Richard suffered three broken ribs and a sprained wrist, and Owens a fractured skull. "Tommy was struck behind the ear with what the doctor believed was a brick," Richard said.

Police came to their rescue, Richard stated, and arrested 47, they were told. He understood, he said, they were all released the next day for lack of evidence.

[Transcription note: it appears that Dick Schott did not graduate from West Point - he later enlisted in the Navy]

Two more enlistments reported Thursday at the United States Naval recruiting station in Dubuque, brought to 28 the number of Dubuqueland men who have enlisted in various branches of the Navy since July 1. The two new recruits are Richard Bertram Schott, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bert R. Schott, and Greggory DeAngelo Harrington, son of Mr. and Mrs. George V. Harrington, all of Marquette, Ia.

Schott, who has completed the 70-hour course offered at the National Defense School at the CCC camp in Caledonia, Minn., enlisted in Class V-3 of the Naval Reserve, which is the naval communication division. Harrington enlisted in Class V-6 of the Naval Reserve and plans to take the machinist's mate course. Both passed their preliminary examinations Wednesday and will go to Des Moines within a few weeks for the final examinations.
