RODENBURG [sic] RITES HELD ON TUESDAY
_______

Aged Woman Suffers Frostbite In January
_______

DIED SATURDAY
_______

Funeral services were held on Tuesday morning for Mrs. Anna Rodenberg, 83, at St. Mary’s church. The services were in charge of Rev. J. A. Dupont and burial was in the church cemetery.

Died at Home of Daughter

Mrs. Rodenberg died last Saturday about 8:45 p.m. at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ed Schnieder following a long illness. Several weeks ago Mrs. Rodenberg suffered severe frostbite when the fire went out in her home and she spent the night unprotected during the January cold wave. She never recovered from this experience.

Mrs. Rodenburg [sic] was born January 17, 1859, in Pennsylvania, and on April 15, 1884, was married to Mathias Boss in Clayton county. A son, Andrew Boss lives at San Antonio, Texas.

Children Survive

On March 7, 1899, she was married to August Rodenburg at Ceres. Two children survive. They are Mrs. Sylvia Rodenburg Schnieder of Guttenberg and Oliver Rodenburg of Davenport. Nine grandchildren survive.

Four brothers and one sister preceded Mrs. Rodenburg in death.

I am confused by the surnames in this obituary. Anna was my great grandmother. I knew the Andrew Boss of San Antonio (my uncle) well. The death certificate for Mathias Boss has her maiden name as Bittner, but this name is not mentioned in the obit. I gather her maiden name was just not included. Any thoughts?

My sincere thanks to Ken Johnson for posting this obit.

I noticed the obit for Anna Rodenberg which has a note at the bottom from a descendant wondering about her maiden name. I found a copy of her first marriage and her surname is stated as Buettner, just a different spelling than the one on her husband's death certificate that he references. Ray might be interested in the family tie between his aunt Sylvia and her husband Ed.

Marriage record for Anna Buettner and Mathias Boss from familysearch.org database Iowa, County Marriages, 1838-1934:
Mathias Boss & Annie Buettner
Marriage 15 Apr 1884
Clayton co., Iowa, U.S.A.

It caught my eye because Anna's daughter Sylvia married Ed Schneider, who is a grandson of Lukas Moser and Matilda Risch (the family album I submitted years ago: http://iagenweb.org/clayton/album/LMoser_fam.htm

Their oldest daughter Paulina was Ed's mother. Ed's wife Sylvia Rodenberg's mother Anna Bittner's first husband was Mathias Boss, the half-first cousin of Matilda Risch who was Ed's grandmother and the wife of Lukas Moser. Ed and Sylvia probably never realized they were shirt-tail relations.

Administrator: unfortunately many obits didn't give maiden names - I have added Bittner & Buettner to the surname list so they will be found by anyone searching for that name.
