Elkader Register, Thur., 23 Apr. 1891.
Last Thursday afternoon a very sad affair occurred in Wagner township. During the thunder storm of that date, Edward Fillenworth and an employee named Harnack were at work in the field on Mr. F's farm. As the rain increased they started for the house with the team. Then came a flash of lightning, and Mr. Fillenworth was instantly killed and Mr. Harnack was rendered unconscious for some time. The deceased was a young farmer of Wagner, residing about four miles from Monona. He was born in Clayton county about 26 years ago, and was held in the highest esteem by all who knew him. He was married about four months ago, and his young wife is nearly prostrated with grief over his sudden death.
The funeral took place on Sunday last, and was very largely attended by friends and neighbors of the family.
(Note: WPA records list Edw. Fillenwarth, 1865 / 4-16-1891, in Gooding Cemetery. See his gravestone picture on the Iowa Gravestone Photo Project.)
