Died - At the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Gilbert, July 20, 1908, Parma Maude Gilbert-Hupfer, aged 30 years and 3 days.

The death of Parma severs another link in the family circle, called to the heavenly home in the beauty and bloom of womanhood. Born in Monona, educated in Monona, a graduate of the High School in her fifteenth year, followed by a year at the Normal School in Cedar Falls, then two years in the Teacher's Department of the Chicago Musical College, when, for a couple of years, she followed the vocation of instrumental music. Very many of our young people were her pupils, obtaining their first impressions of the musical art from her thorough knowledge and her well ordered process of teaching.

Of a genial disposition, gifted with many accomplishments, in deportment a lady who readily adapted herself to conditions, her years were marked by precept and action, in the school, among her associates, and in the circle of every phase of society. Kindness of heart from a sympathetic nature, was a characteristic in her womanly goodness. Pleasant greeting and words of good cheer abounded in the goodness of her heart. Life in the home of her youth, among her companions and in society, had their charms, which were met with a womanly grace and a loving kindness that came from a purity of soul and a kindness of heart, tempered by an innocent child-like nature.

For the past three years the deceased had been in failing health. A year ago with her sister, Lottie, she took a trip to the Pacific coast with the hope of regaining her health, returning feeling much better from the outing. On last Memorial Day she made a visit to her brother, Page, at Ottumwa, visiting with friends at Des Moines and other places. The day following her return home she took to her bed, stricken with typhoid fever.

There were hopes of recovery, but nearing the end of a three week's siege her condition became more serious, and on the 20th, in the bright of the afternoon, her soul answered to the call. Up to a few moments before death she retained consciousness and recognized those about her bed.

The funeral was held at the residence yesterday afternoon, largely attended by friends of the family and neighbors. The services were conducted by Rev. B.H. Cheney, pastor of the Congregational church. The sympathy of the community goes out to the bereaved parents, the brother and sister, and Master Lyle, son of sister Carrie, who has been one of the family since the death of his mother.

Those from out of town in attendance at the funeral were: Page L. Gilbert, Ottumwa; W.J. Tapper, Rowley; E.V. Gilbert, wife and son Clare, Ossian; Mrs. Geo. Carpenter, Atty. M.E. Geiser, Dr. and Mrs. Malcome, New Hampton; Mr. and Mrs. James Barnes, Mason City, and Marvin Cook, Milwaukee.

The following were pallbearers: Joe Steele, L.A. Walch, Pat English, Herb Buckman, Ray Egbert and H.S. Rittenhouse.

Burial in Monona cemetery by the side of her sister Carrie*, who died in February, 1898.

~the name & issue date of the newspaper inadvertently was not recorded by the transcriber; the obit was in the Monona news column - items from the Monona Leader.

Notes: Parma was d/o Frank & Sarah (Olmsted) Gilbert. She was married to Harry N. Hupfer in 1903 (FamilySearch.org: Iowa Marriages). Notably absent from mention in the obit, is the her marriage, and the presence of Harry at the funeral. He is shown to be a widower on the 1910 U.S. census, Minnesota; and is also buried in the Monona City cemetery, having died in 1924. Newspaper mention is made of Harry & Parma visiting her parents from their home in Lindstrom, Minn. several times following their marriage.

*Carrie (Gilbert) Tapper, w/o William J. Tapper
