Elkader Register, Fri., 19 Jan. 1883.
This week it becomes our painful duty to chronicle the death of John D., eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Hayes, of Littleport, which sad event occurred at the home of his parents on last Friday afternoon at 3 o'clock, after an illness of only a few weeks duration, the disease occasioning his death being measles.
John had been living in Jones county for the past year, and came home to visit with his parents and friends during the holidays. He was born at Dubuque in August, 1856, and was therefore a little over 26 years of age at the time of his death. He was a bright, industrious young man, and was universally respected. His death will prove a great blow to his aged parents, who had depended on him as a staff for their declining years, on which they might lean as they walked towards the valley of the shadow of death, but an all wise Father who rules the universe has decreed it otherwise, and they must bow their heads in humble submission to the heavy affliction.
The funeral, which was held on Sunday afternoon, was one of the largest ever seen in the county, and fully attested the high esteem in which the young man was held by his friends and acquaintances. Rev. Father Fogarty, pastor of the Littleport church, delivered a long and impressive sermon over the remains, after which all that was mortal of the loving son, kind brother and true friend was laid away in its last resting place in the Catholic cemetery near the home where he spent his boyhood's happy days and grew to noble manhood. The following gentlemen, who were selected from among his old schoolmates, acted as pallbearers; Messrs. Charles Hogan, Maurice Conway, Roger Hogan, Jeremiah Donohoe, Daniel Gleason and Jas. Sullivan.
The grief-stricken parents, sisters and brother have the sympathy of a large circle of friends in this the hour of their sad affliction.
