Elkader Register, Thur., 10 Dec. 1903.
A terrible accident occurred on Friday afternoon in Highland twp., resulting in the death of Jesse, the son of M. E. Tripp and wife.
As near as we can learn the particulars are that the family was moving from Pat Penneton's place to a house near the Highland creamery. Jesse and his father had taken a load to the new place where Mr. Tripp remained, the boy returning for another load. On his way to the Penneton place in some manner Jesse was thrown out of the wagon, just how no one can tell. This is supposed to have been about 3:30 in the afternoon. The team came running home and was cared for, and Mr. Tripp became uneasy and also started home.
About dark Penneton's man discovered the boy lying beside the road and with others assisted in carrying him to the house. Medical assistance was called but it was found that his skull had been fractured, his jaw broken and there was a severe cut on the back of his neck. By the time the doctors arrived he was breathing his last.
The boy was about 17 years old, a quiet, industrious boy, willing to assist his parents in their struggle for livelihood. It is a sad blow for the unfortunate parents and they have the sympathy of all in their great affliction.
The remains were taken to Auburn, Fayette county, where the funeral was held Sunday.
