Elkader Register, Thur., 17 Dec. 1903.
Jane Humphreys died at 2 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 12. She was born in Montgomeryshire, Wales, April 1st, 1816, thus being nearly 88 years of age. In 1840 she was married to John Perry. Three years after they emigrated to America, settling at Utica, N.Y., where they lived several years, coming to Iowa in 1853, locating on the farm in Boardman twp., where they passed the remainder of their lives on the place now owned by their son Charles. To them was born a family of twelve children, ten of whom grew to maturity, seven of whom survive the parents. Those who have passed away are John, Keziah and Edward. Those who are yet living are Mrs. V. D. Jacobs, New Hampton; Mrs. Robt. Sherman, Donnan; Mrs. A. C. Krieg, Minneapolis, Minn.; Mrs. Fred Alderson, Strawberry Point; William, Sacramento, Cal.; Charles, Elkader, and George, Cedar Rapids, all of whom were present at the burial except William and Mrs. Jacobs.
For her kindness of disposition Mrs. Perry was esteemed by all who knew her. Her faithfulness as a wife, her loving character as a mother endeared her to every member of her family. Her home on the old farm was a Mecca for all her children. There it was that her children visited, once, twice or more times each year. There it was they were always welcome. When the father died in 1895 one of the two links were broken, yet the old farm was home. Now that the Mother is gone, the great magnet that bound the family together has moved on to that silent cemetery at Elkader, whither seven hearts will find a sadness yet a contentment to think that she has gone to a better world. Mother, you will be greatly missed by the children who have always looked up to you as the embodiment of all that was faithful and true. A mother that has been kind and tender to the family at all times and under all conditions. Mother, you are gone but there are hearts that will beat for you till that great day comes when all will be united in mother's new home.
The funeral was held Monday afternoon at the Congregational church, Rev. G. W. Baxter officiating, and was attended by many old friends and neighbors.
