Elkader Register, Thur., 10 Dec. 1903. Local News column. From the Edgewood Journal, undated.
Mrs. Levi Fishel and A. B. Lewis received word this week of the death of their uncle, M. J. Walter, which occurred at his home near Summers, Montana, on Tuesday, Nov. 24th, 1903, he being about 72 years of age at the time of his death. It seems he had been fighting a fire that was destroying a building on his premises and was overcome by the heat and smoke and went into the house where he was found shortly after, dead.
Mr. Walter, who was better known around here as "Matt", was born and raised in Clayton county and lived on Elk Creek near J. P. Brookshier's until about twenty years ago he went from here to Wisconsin where he lived two years. He then started for Montana with a team and when he reached that state he did not possess a dollar. He went to work, however, and at the time of his death he was worth about $10,000. He was the owner of 820 acres of fine land and as the above shows was in good circumstances.- Edgewood Journal.
