Added by S. Ferrall 11/7/2019:

Ara Candee, one of the pioneers of Clayton Co., was born in Oswego Co., New York, Feb. 17, 1826, and died at his home, after a lingering illness, in his seventy seventh year.

The family originally came from Connecticut where they had resided for several generations.

The founders of the family in the United States having immigrated in the seventeenth century from England, they were patriots and devoted to their adopted county, his Grandfather having carried a musket for seven years in the war of the Revolution.

They resided in New York until 1834 when they emigrated to Michigan settling not far from Toledo, Ohio, on a wild timber claim. In 1850 at Whiteford, Michigan he was united in marriage to Cordelia Tiny; four children were born to this union, three of whom survive him.

In 1852 they immigrated to Iowa. In 1855 they moved to Minnesota where they resided but a short time again returning to Iowa where they have since lived.

Mr. Candee has been in failing health through the spring months, but since the death of his wife which occured June 1st, he has failed very rapidly and the morning of Aug. 13th, his spirit was freed from the pain and suffering of this world and went into the "Great Unknown."

His life was one of general kindness ever generous, always ready to do a kind deed, his character was one of the rare ones of earth, and death in claiming him claimed a man whose life was a benefit to the world.

His work is done, his life well spent and in that undiscovered country may he find rest and peace.

The friends and relatives from a distance who attended the funeral were: Mrs. Dora Van Gorder and daughter Stella of Minneapolis; Roger Candee of Wells, Minnn.; Addie and Alta Entwisle, Rockwell; Erdly Cassada, Jeny Leas of Rossville Io. and Mr. and Mrs. H.H. Stillwell and daughter Anna of Waukon.

Card of Thanks
We wish to extend our sincere thanks to the friends and neighbors who so kindly assisted in the death and burial of our loved one.
Dora Van Gorder, Roger Candee, Asa Candee
