At her home near Communia, on Saturday evening, July 25th, 1903, after an illness of several weeks, occurred the death of Mrs. Christian Gossmann, at the age of 77 years, 5 months and 6 days.
Sophia Maria Hamann was born in Grosherzogtuhm, Mecklenberg-Schwerin, Germany, Feb. 19th, 1826. She was united in marriage with Christian Gossmann at Guttenberg, Aug. 26th, 1851. In 1852 they moved to Garnavillo and in 1853 moved to their well known farm in Read twp. In 1893 they moved to the farm near Communia where they have since resided. About two years since they celebrated their golden wedding which was attended by their children and friends.
With the aged husband, seven children, one daughter and six sons, survive to mourn the loss of a kind and devoted mother. These are Mrs. H. W. Wilke, of Elkader; Henry, at Read; Fred, at Communia; Christian, at Lester, Iowa; John, at Brookings, S.D.; Louis F., at Elkader, and Wm. H., at Gunder. Also twenty-six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon at the Congregational church at Elkader, the service being conducted by Revs. G. F. Braun, of Farmersburg, and G. W. Baxter, of this place. The last rites were attended by a large number of old friends and neighbors who came to pay their last tribute of respect to the departed loved one.
