Henry Harmes, veteran of the Civil War, died early Sunday morning at his home at Three Corners, south of Elkader. He had been sick but a few days.

Mr. Harmes was a native of Hanover, Germany, born in 1830 and came with his wife to America in 1850. Locating first at Waterloo, he remained there one year, then went to California and after four years returned to Iowa, locating on a farm in Cox Creek township. In 1864 Mr. Harmes joined the Union Army, becoming a member of Co. E., 16th Iowa Inf. His wife dying, he was married to Mrs. Grave in 1865 and after the war they began farming near Communia. Most of the time since Mr. Harmes has been farming in that vicinity, buying the place at Three Corners in 1895. Mrs. Harmes died in 1898. Two sons of Mr. Harmes are living, Sam, at Oxford Junction, Ia., and Frank, of Boardman twp., and a daughter, Mrs. John Brust, of Boardman.

The funeral was held at Communia on Tuesday, services held at Turner Hall with Rev. G. W. Baxter officiating. A delegation of Boardman Post, G.A.R., of Elkader, of which deceased was a member, gave the last honors of the order. The Communia Turners were also present.
